But he refuses to give in. “I’ve always tried to write positive songs, and this album isn’t quite that,” the 72-year-old admits. “But I always hope. I think that’s why I wrote this album.”

With gallows humor, Trout notes that his new album opens with a song called Broken and ends with a song called Falls Apart. He can't deny the socio-political mood that hangs in the air. The two songs are the two bookends between which some of the most personal, bruised songs of his career are wedged. All the songs on the record are written by Walter Trout himself and, in addition to the subjects, also contain the most (blues) rocking and challenging guitar work.
