Following a worldwide arena tour, the release of 2018’s UK Top Ten album ‘Let’s Go Sunshine’ saw The Kooks top the bill for all festivals both at home and in Europe. However, following a successful festival season, Brexit hit the band hard. In order to maintain their connection to Europe, Luke Pritchard (frontman/vocals) decided to head to Berlin. The frontman quickly found himself moving in the creative circles of the capital, where he also met the collaborators who would work with him on the behemoth of their sixth album. In collaboration with Tobias Kuhn (known from Mark Forster, Clueso, Alice Merton), the majority of the record was written and produced. Everything went smoothly and five fresh tracks were soon in place, but in March 2020 COVID put an end to Pritchard’s European dream. Forced to return to the UK to finish writing sessions via Zoom until Tobias could fly to London and record with him and the rest of the band, Hugh Harris (lead guitar/synth/bass) and Alexis Nunez (drums). The music echoes Berlin in a raw and minimalistic way. We also get to meet a new version of Pritchard on this record. Married and a new father, he shows that he is leaving his past behind. “I really hope that that sense of inner peace comes across,” Pritchard says of the album’s optimistic-sounding outlook. The album is a reflection of what he was feeling in real time in a pre- and post-COVID world. It’s also a thank you to their fans for sticking with them for so long.
