“Big, bold emotions” are the binding factor on Sylvie Kreusch’s adventurous new album Comic Trip. Kreusch gives up her exalted position as a night owl and trades her raging red locks for a tempestuous blonde. With her hands on the helm, she embarks on a journey where the fruits of life are reaped.

With stylistic nods to bands like The B-52's and Stereolab, Comic Trip's title track sounds like a pop version of a retro comic book, packed with spectacle, intrigue and euphoria. Thanks to the song's bright and sparkling arrangements and witty hooks ("PAAW PAAW! BANG BANG! KACHAAAAW! WHEM BLEM! / I always knew / But I want to believe it now"), Kreusch transforms into a comic book heroine incarnate, jumping from panel to panel. She lets her seductive voice derail into an almost childlike recklessness.

Comic Trip is both a departure through Sylvie’s vivid imagination and an arrival at her most natural, candid self. The Lou Reed-esque “Butterfly” playfully interrogates passé ideas of perfectionism and beauty. In the cinematic “Ride Away,” indebted to the legendary Ennio Morricone, she plays a runaway bride riding into a new sunset on horseback. “Hocus Pocus” paints a neo-western setting à la Wim Wenders’ classic Paris, Texas, with Sylvie swinging through the boardwalks as a worldly-wise and wanton mistress.

Every journey eventually comes around a bend, and Comic Trip is no different. On 'Home' and closer 'You Can't Get It Done', Sylvie returns to a haven where the album's carousel of impressions and experiences is relived forever. On “You Can't Get It Done', she asks herself out loud: “Do you need another broken heart to live up to this dream?” On the sweeping, candid 'Final Hour', in which she meets her lover in an apocalyptic downpour at the height of her passion, she answers her own question. “I keep dreaming on/No, I don't need a promise/We don't need to fall apart”.
