In an attempt to make my work more personal, I explored my Moroccan roots, and that worked out well. When I started listening to the music from my youth again, something happened: in the rhythms I recognized a rhythm that is also in my body. It felt very natural to do something with that. North Africa and the Arab world have many exciting sounds, a rich philosophy and beautiful poetry. The Arabic-language song on the record is based on a poem by the legendary Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani, the ud samples on the record come from Rif folk songs. These elements have given my English-language guitar pop extra meaning.

The songs are about 'in-betweenness' and doubt, connection, hope and love. About being unashamedly yourself. The process of making the record has shown me that everything is possible. That different parts of my identity can exist next to each other and can strengthen each other. It gives me confidence to know that I can decide for myself what I take with me from which world, in creating my own truth and reality. Important for this process was that I did everything on my own. From taping the demos to playing almost all the instruments, programming the samples and writing the lyrics. It results in a record that is an extension of who I am.
