"Sign 'O' the Times", uitgebracht in 1987, is het negende studioalbum van Prince en wordt algemeen beschouwd als een van zijn grootste meesterwerken, zo niet hét hoogtepunt van zijn immense creativiteit. Oorspronkelijk bedoeld als drie afzonderlijke albums ("Dream Factory", "Camille", en "Crystal Ball"), werd het uiteindelijk een dubbelalbum dat zijn ongekende muzikale breedte toonde.

Het album is een eclectische en ambitieuze reis door Prince's muzikale landschap, waarin hij moeiteloos genres combineert zoals funk, R&B, rock, pop, soul en psychedelica. De teksten zijn even divers, variërend van maatschappelijk commentaar op armoede, drugs en aids tot diep persoonlijke reflecties over liefde, seks en spiritualiteit. Prince speelde vrijwel alle instrumenten zelf.
