“Shall we just start making music again?” That was Niels Littooij’s answer when he discussed the plans for his new album with his team. “Let’s see the studio as a playground again. Making music because it’s fun.” Because if you peel everything away, that’s why Niels became Nielson and picked up his guitar more than eleven years ago to tell stories. That’s how the plans for the fourth studio album came about: “Niels“ In the studio, the only rule was: ‘there are no rules’. Songs with or without guitar, with or without beat, within familiar frameworks or just outside them. With artists with whom he has a personal connection in various ways: Sarita Lorena, Maxine and Sigourney K.

During the writing process, previous, self-imposed standards were swept aside. Because who actually determines those standards? For a breath of fresh air, Nielson asked his regular live guitarist Kevin Patrick to co-write and add a bit of musical open-mindedness. This led to Niels: a layered pop album that sounds more varied than ever before. Niels: “If you turn off the vocals, the music itself also tells a story.” The best thing about the album? “That you hear a guy who is having fun.”

However, that does not mean that Niels only contains happy songs. On the album, Niels embraces the man he was and the man he has become. Growing older, relationship problems, changing friendships, loss, happiness, big and small life questions: everything is discussed. Universal issues that every person has to deal with and are therefore recognizable, but unique because of how Nielson relates to these themes.

It helps that he is older, past thirty. Nielson has been on stage for eleven years now. In 2012 he made a flying start with his energetic Dutch pop. After his debut: Beauty & de Brains Nielson scored hits with Hoe, Mannenharten, Sexy Als Ik Dans, Hotelsuite, Diamant, IJskoud and Ik Sta Jou Beter and he received several gold and platinum records. His latest album Diamant earned him two Edisons. In 2021 he released the EP Grijs under his own name. The single of the same name symbolized the end of a dark period after the sudden loss of loved ones. The song became a platinum hit thanks to Jaap Reesema's rendition in the program Beste Zangers. Together they performed a special version during the annual Televizier Gala which led to great emotion in the Netherlands.
