Zonder gitaren en een halve set bassnaren, slaagde Morphine erin harder te rocken dan de meeste van hun concurrentie. Met voormalig Treat Her Right gitarist/zanger en frontman Mark Sandman combineerde Morphine blues- en jazzelementen met meer traditionele rockarrangementen, waardoor de band een ongewone sound kreeg. Mark Sandman zong onderscheidend met een diepe, relaxte crooner stem. Het succes dat Morphine in de jaren negentig verdiende, zijn geworteld in dit debuut.
