Mark Knopfler has become such a fixture in the music world that you can set your watch by it when a new album by the guitarist is released. However, this time he has taken his time: after more than five years, the sequel to 'Down The Road Wherever' is released. 'Elegant' is the first thing that comes to mind when you listen to 'One Deep River'. The album is soothing as ever, a warm bath with the typical Knopflerian guitar riffs, his calming voice and way of telling stories. First single 'Ahead Of The Game' is such a typical Knopflerian song: a perhaps autobiographical gem: a retrospective about a young singer/songwriter who is trying to break through. In any case, 'One Deep River' has a nostalgic and autobiographical undertone. The title track is about the river that ran through his hometown of Newcastle. "Crossing the Tyne is always in my mind. It's what you did when you left as a youngster and that feeling will always be there every time you cross the river. You leave, or you come back and that connects you with your childhood.'' The sentiment that colors the atmosphere of 'One Deep River' is not a false sentiment. Knopfler never falls into clichés: he still knows how to find his own words for familiar emotions and with the sparse arrangements, his recognizable sound in voice and guitar playing, the loose drumming and the meandering slide guitar, those emotions come across. Future classic.
