Pohorylle is not only a Spanish bag brand and the real surname of the Jewish-German war photographer Gerda Taro (who died during the Spanish Civil War), it is also the title of the debut album by the travel-loving Margo Cilker from Oregon, who lived in the Basque Country for a while. The cheerful-sounding That River that opens the album is about Basque immigrants on their way to Oregon. Travel is a recurring theme on this excellent roots album that does not sound like a debut at all. This is probably because Margo Cilker has been traveling the country for six years to perform, often with sister Sarah, who can also be heard frequently on Pohorylle as a (beautiful) second voice. On the other hand, there are the experienced musicians who support both Cilkers, such as Jennie Conlee (Decemberists), Jason Kardong (Son Volt), Mirabai Peart (Joanna Newsom) and Kelly Pratt (Beirut). Sera Cahoone, an underrated singer/songwriter herself, produced this beautiful album, which can easily be counted among the best (roots) debuts of 2021.
