In the summer of 2023, Ludovico Einaudi rented a house on the island of Elba, Italy, and discovered inside beautiful oil paintings on wood. They depicted views from the house and seemed very personal. Upon inquiry, he learned that they had been painted over time by a woman who had owned the house in the 1950s and spent her summers there. This inspired him to think back to his own childhood summers, which were full of freedom and sensory experiences, in contrast to returning to his industrial hometown of Turin. He realized that these summer memories are a shared experience for many people and this thought inspired his album 'The Summer Portraits'.
