If you’re talking about modern progressive rock and you don’t mention Haken, you’re doing it wrong. Since the southern English sextet started jamming together in 2004, they’ve been one of the most stalwart yet adventurous forces in their genre. And how do you honour such an eclectic, unpredictable career? You make Fauna: Haken’s most genre-bending and conceptually compelling album yet. “The premise of the album when we started writing it was that each song would have an animal assigned to it,” explains vocalist and co-founder Ross Jennings. “They all have something to do with the animal kingdom that we could write about, but they also have a connection to the human world. There are layers to each song, and some are more obvious than others.”

Musically, Fauna represents Haken at their most diverse. Taurus opens the album with its scraping heavy metal chords, as polyrhythmic as they are erratic. Ross’ melodic croon and triumphant chorus, however, are true Haken. Eyes Of Ebony is pure math rock, delicate in its start-stop clean guitar picking and chiming cymbals, while Island In The Clouds shows off its bouncing bass line. Eighteen years later, they’re still evolving and keeping their fans on their toes. Is there a better definition of progressive rock than that?
