Rond 1992 waren de unplugged-sessies op MTV een trend; bijna elke rockband of artiest deed ze. Golden Earring bassist Rinus Gerritsen stelde voor om zelf een akoestisch album op te nemen. De platenmaatschappij was aanvankelijk niet zo enthousiast en met een klein budget nam de band het album live op in een intiem café in Amsterdam. The Naked Truth bleek het bestverkochte album van de Golden Earring te zijn.
