Ed Sheeran's new album '-' (Subtract) is the latest in a series of mathematical albums he has released over the past decade. The album harks back to Ed's singer-songwriter roots and is written out of personal grief and hope, showing him at his most vulnerable and honest. Writing '-' was always on his agenda, but a number of life-changing events that have taken place in the past year of Ed's life have given the songs and the process of making them a whole new meaning.

For the writing and production of '-', Ed teamed up with Aaron Dessner (The National). After being introduced by their mutual friend Taylor Swift, the pair began shaping the album in February 2022. They locked themselves in the studio for a month, where they came up with 30 brand new songs, 14 of which appear on the album. In addition to the production, Ed pushed the boundaries in his vocals and lyrics, making '-' his most profound record to date and also proving that he is one of the most gifted lyricists of his generation.
