I Am verscheen op 9 juni 1979 via CBS Records en bereikte de nummer 1-positie in de Soul Albums-lijst en nummer 3 in de Billboard 200. Onder productie van bandleider Maurice White combineert het album funk, soul, disco en pop tot een rijke, feestelijke klank, met de gouden singles "Boogie Wonderland" (met The Emotions) en "After the Love Has Gone" als absolute hoogtepunten. Het album werd dubbel platina gecertificeerd in de VS en blijft tot op de dag van vandaag een feestvaste klassieker.
