Hunky Dory verscheen op 17 december 1971 via RCA Records — zijn eerste release voor het label dat hem het decennium erop trouw zou blijven — en toont een Bowie die voor het eerst voornamelijk op piano componeerde in plaats van gitaar. Het resultaat is een kaleidoscopische mix van popstijlen, verbonden door zijn unieke visie op sekse, kitsch en hoge en lage cultuur. Met klassiekers als "Changes," "Life on Mars?" en "Oh! You Pretty Things" bevat dit album enkele van zijn meest geliefde en tijdloze songs, terwijl "Queen Bitch" en "The Bewlay Brothers" zijn stilistische veelzijdigheid onderstrepen.
