Dit album markeerde een terugkeer naar een meer ingetogen, akoestisch georiënteerd geluid, reminiscent aan zijn eerdere werken zoals "Nebraska" en "The Ghost of Tom Joad". Het album is diepgaand en reflectief, en focust op het vertellen van verhalen.

De nummers op "Devils & Dust" behandelen vaak donkere en complexe thema's, waaronder de psychologische impact van oorlog (met name de Irak-oorlog), de struggles van de arbeidersklasse, religieus fanatisme en persoonlijke verlossing. De muzikale begeleiding is overwegend sober, met Springsteen's zang en akoestische gitaar centraal, soms aangevuld met subtiele arrangementen van andere instrumenten.
