After years living on opposite sides of the Atlantic, world events have brought Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansell of Blood Red Shoes back together in what has become the most fruitful period of their 17-year marriage.

"It's been a long time since we both lived in the same city," Steven explains. "We wrote this album in LA at Laura's house, then came to England to record it... and then everything went crazy."

They quickly realized that they couldn’t release the album or tour until the world returned to some semblance of normalcy, and the band quickly found themselves diverting their energy to other projects. Laura-Mary started a podcast, Never Meet Your Idols, with her best friend in LA, interviewing everyone from Zack Snyder to Mark Lanegan to CHVRCHES. Season 3 is now live. Steven has also branched out into writing and producing for other alternative artists like Circe, ARXX, Aiko, and XCerts, racking up millions of streams in the process.

After collaborating on Laura-Mary’s upcoming solo mini-album ‘Town Called Nothing’ and restless from the lack of touring, the duo began jamming in rehearsal spaces, leading to the rapid writing, recording and release of the impossibly titled Ø EP in the summer of 2021. Ending what the band calls an “off year”.

Which brings us back to GHOSTS ON TAPE. It seems that much like David Lynch’s The Lost Highway, nothing is linear in the world of Blood Red Shoes. Written and recorded for their most recent EP, GHOSTS ON TAPE is a giant leap into new territory for the band. Their most musically and emotionally mature work, it’s a complex, imaginative, and very gothic development of their sound. Musically, it leaves almost no trace of their former selves.

“We’ve always been outsiders, from the very beginning,” Steven says. “This album is really about asserting ourselves as our own little island,” he adds. “We’ve made a career out of being told what we’re not, of being rejected, of not fitting in, and this album is purposefully pushing us into all of our strangeness, highlighting all of the things that make us different.” Obsessed with true crime and murder podcasts, many of the songs on the record are told in character, exploring the dark psyches of those at the pinnacle of outsiderhood: serial killers. GHOSTS ON TAPE paints a picture of a dark and disturbing world. It’s the sound of a united, confident duo who know exactly who they are, even if the outside world doesn’t quite get it. The sound of two people who have spent their entire adult lives making music together, and who, now more than ever, are finding new avenues for their creativity.

"Ultimately, this album is an invitation," Steven explains. "We're saying, this is our world, these are our darkest thoughts and feelings - our ghosts - captured on tape. You're welcome to join us. Come and embrace the strange."
