The Matador Revisionist History Series kicks off 2023 with a 30th anniversary celebration of Bettie Serveert’s debut album , “Palomine.” This 1993 classic is being pressed by Matador for the first time since its original release. “Palomine” will be released on June 23rd on translucent orange vinyl featuring the “Brain-Tag” 7” that was included with the original pressing.
A digital deluxe edition of the album is available now on all streaming services. This version includes a number of bonus tracks, two of which are from the 'Brain-Tag' 7”. Additionally, remastered versions of the music videos "Kid's Allright", "Palomine" and "Tom Boy" can be seen on YouTube .
"Looking back on the recording of the Palomine album, we were as green as grass," say Carol van Dijk and Peter Visser, "but we loved music and especially playing our own songs. When we started our band in the summer of '91, we never had ambitions, never thought about a 'career' in music, except maybe a few gigs. But then Matador Records responded to our first demo and offered us a record deal, which got the ball rolling and changed our lives forever! 'Pal o' mine' will always be like a dear friend to us and even after 30 years we still play those songs with pleasure."
Although a debut album, 'Palomine' marked the second time for Bettie Serveert. The band was first formed in Arnhem in 1986 and initially called itself Betty Serveert, with bassist Herman Bunskoeke, guitarist Peter Visser and singer/guitarist Carol van Dijk. Bunskoeke and Visser were also playing in a more established band at the time, De Artsen, and decided to focus on this. Betty Serveert ceased to exist after 6 months.
In late 1990, De Artsen split up. Bettie Serveert, as they now called themselves, got back together, together with drummer Berend Dubbe. A demo of seven songs was recorded in December 1991 and one copy ended up on Matador Records. Watch a short video about the band and their history - Who is Bettie Serveert? - below.
