Utrecht quartet Banji announces their debut album 'Freshcakes'. The release is on October 14, 2022 via [PIAS] Recordings. The new single 'Cornflakes' has also been released. 'Cornflakes' is a sample-laden 'wonk-pop song': Morris Brandt's cartoonish vocals and a real chip-tune groove. "The single is about the consequences of giving in to small desires and the bigger problems that can cause." Banji's debut album 'Freshcakes' shows the sweet indie pop that the quartet has created over the past year. However, this cheerful sound hides the dark themes that are discussed in the songs, so to speak. Morris explains: "Banji's songwriting has always reflected my surroundings. The big themes of this album are struggling with adulthood, self-worth and self-esteem, mental health, frustrations, addiction and finding your own self-discipline and maturity as you get older. The lyrics I wrote while making 'Freshcakes' are mostly built around personal social situations and topics that are hard for me to parse. Stressful feelings about mistakes made, expectations not met and the guilt that comes with that. I learned at a young age to use music as an outlet for frustration and stress. The main thing I wanted to do with this record was to find a place for those feelings and let them out, a kind of therapy in a way." In addition to being musicians, each member of the band is a music producer and they have collectively sunk their teeth into the album. They have previously worked with Jeroen De Pessemier at the ICP Studios in Brussels where The Cure and The Vaccines recorded, and with Mucky, who has worked with Sevdaliza and The Black Eyed Peas. Now they have taken the reins completely in their hands, giving every aspect of the record a personal touch and a clear Banji sound. 'Freshcakes' is an album that sets the band apart from other indie bands - from the hyperactive 'Listen' and 'Chatterbox', to the laid-back 'Dogbreath' & 'Chills' or the candid 'TalkieWalkie'. They played an after show set for Vampire Weekend, were the support act for the Belgian icons of Balthazar and play their own successful tours. The (international) media is also interested in Banji and give rave reviews in Billboard, DIY, Clash, DORK among others. The album 'Freshcakes' - will be released on October 14th via [PIAS].
