On the wall of Arcade Fire's New Orleans studio are photographs that mark out the territory for the group's sixth album, WE. On one side, images of what haunts us—a crushing boot, a wounded man, a child staring blankly at a screen. On the other side, cheerful family photos. In the center is a photo of the cover of Yevgeny Zamyatin's 1921 science fiction novel "We," depicting a crystal-clear skyscraper in which the citizens of a dystopia live under constant surveillance.

Arcade Fire had already written an album and began recording in February 2020, but was interrupted by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Win & Régine spent the rest of that year and most of the next writing more songs. “It was the longest thing we’ve ever written, straight up, probably ever,” Butler said. Still, the resulting album — produced by Nigel Godrich, Win & Régine — is a concise 40 minutes long. The first side, “I,” is about our struggles: The second side, “WE,” is about our love for each other.
