Kathleen Edwards is terug met ‘Billionaire’

Kathleen Edwards is back with 'Billionaire'

After five years of silence, Canadian singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards returns with her new album Billionaire , set for release on August 22, 2025. It’s her first album since 2020’s stunning Total Freedom , a record largely overshadowed by the pandemic. But Billionaire is anything but a quiet return, a confident and personal record that reflects her turbulent years.

“It’s safe to say the world has changed a lot in the last five years,” Edwards recently wrote on Instagram. “And so has I.” After the release of Total Freedom , she had to abandon the idea of a proper promotional tour. Instead, she dove back into everyday life: working in her own coffee shop, getting married, moving (twice), and eventually settling in another country. Those personal upheavals form the undercurrent of Billionaire .

Collaboration with Jason Isbell and Gena Johnson

The seed of Billionaire was planted in 2024, when Edwards recorded a cover of Jason Isbell’s Traveling Alone . That led to an unexpected collaboration: Isbell offered to produce her new album, along with Gena Johnson as co-producer. The trio began recording in September 2024 at Nashville’s legendary Sound Emporium Studios. Isbell also brought along members of his band, The 400 Unit, as a rhythm section. Edwards’ gratitude for this collaboration is heartfelt: “I’m so grateful to Jason and Gena for their dedication, their time, their care, and their talent. They’ve truly supported me and taken my work to the next level.”

Ten songs, one story

Billionaire features ten tracks, each telling a story about Edwards’ journey. The first two singles, “Save Your Soul” and “Say Goodbye, Tell No One,” set the tone right away: “tough and cool, vulnerable and honest” – just as she herself had hoped. These songs are the musical equivalent of looking in the rearview mirror, while you leave a version of yourself behind, shrinking on the horizon. Edwards doesn’t hesitate to show her influences: “My favorite songwriters and bands are all over my work – and I’m not ashamed of that.”

With Billionaire , Kathleen Edwards proves once again why she has been praised for years as one of the most talented voices in the alt-country and folk rock genre. The record feels like a rebirth: after years of personal upheaval, she sounds focused, inspired and more powerful than ever.
